Reef Tank – Equipment

The entire system is split across two floors with the main display tank located on the first floor and the filtration systems located below the display tank in the basement.

The system includes four main tanks:

  1. Display Tank (125g):  72” x 24” x 18” AGA with dual overflows

  2. Sump (40g):  Black Stock Tank from Tractor Supply
  3. Refugium (40g):  Black Stock Tank from Tractor Supply

  4. Frag Tank (50g):  Black Rubbermaid Stock Tank from Tractor Supply

Lighting

The display tank is lit by a 72” Current Outer Orbit Pro that contains 3 x 250watt metal halides (14K Phoenix bulbs) and 8 x 39w T5 bulbs (4 x 420nm UVL, 4x460nm UVL).

The refugium is lit with 2 standard workroom reflectors and 18w 6500 Kelvin compact fluorescent flood lights.

The frag tank is lit with a 150w Hamilton Pendant with a 10K SE bulb.

Flow

Flow is the display tank is provided by 2 Ecotech Marine Vortech MP40w pumps running at about 75% power and communicating wirelessly in reef crest mode with opposing configurations.

Water is moved between floors by a BlueLine HD70 pump that provides 1750gph at 0’ head height.  Maximum head height is 39 feet.  Given the configuration of plumbing, estimated flow is rated at 1090gph.

Filtration

The protein skimmer is a Vertex Alpha 250 Cone Skimmer.

There are two reactors running, Carbon and GFO (both from GetTankedAquariums.com).

The refugium contains assorted macro algae (chaetomorpha) and live rock rubble.

Temperature Control

The sump contains 2 300w titanium heaters.

There are 3 small fans on the display tank that are used to cool the tank in the summer months.  No chiller is necessary.

The temperature is maintained at 78.4-78.6 degrees during the summer and 81.0-81.2 in the winter.

Dosing

Calcium – The system also includes an AquaC RX-1 Calcium Reactor running ARM Media.

No other dosing occurs.
